Bighorn sheep occur in extreme climates; from cold mountain areas in the Rocky Mountains to barren deserts. In both circumstances, it is advantageous to throw the youngster at the best time of the year only. Lambs of bighorn sheep in nature are therefore always born around May. Then the warmer season begins in the cold mountains and in the desert the rainy season in which more food is available.
In order to survive in the heat of the desert, these sheep are reasonably tolerant to the rise of their body temperature. A special blood vessel system in the palate ensures that the vulnerable brains do not overheat while other parts of the body do rise in temperature.
