Description

Though Painted Ladies (Vanessa Cardui) can be found all over the world, these orange-brown beauties migrate from Europe to Africa every year and pass through the Sahara on their way. But what happens to them afterwards has long been a mystery. Scientists have hypothesized that they either remain in Africa or will return, but evidence to confirm one or the other hypothesis has so far been lacking. Researchers were surprised to find chemical traces of Africa on the wings of some European butterflies. These traces indicate where the individual was eating when the caterpillar was still. Thus, the study proves that the butterflies return every year from Africa to Europe. Their return trip is an annual 12,000-kilometer trip, about 2,000 km per year.
