Description
Water has played a major role in the creation of the area in the National Park De Maasduinen. In the past, the Rhine flowed through the area and the Meuse was still a branch of the Rhine. Today there are still traces of the Rhine, such as the Rhine gravel hidden in the soil. In the last ice age, about 21,000 years ago, the wind got free rein. This ice age was extremely dry and cold. A large part of the landscape was covered with a layer of sand. The powerful west wind took sand and deposited it on the eastern banks of the Meuse. This created the sand ridges and horseshoe-shaped dunes, also called parabolic dunes. From prehistoric times, man influenced nature in De Maasduinen. In the Roman era, forests were cut down to make room for, for example, agricultural land or infrastructure. Since the sixth century, more and more tools have been used to assist in the reclamation of the lost ground. Heidegrounds were lost and forests were planted. In the last fifty to one hundred years, more attention was paid to nature. Nature reserves were created that formed the De Maasduinen National Park since 1996.
