Description
Štrbské Pleso is a picturesque mountain lake of glacial origin and a top tourist destination in the High Tatras, Slovakia. Maximum depth is 20 metres (66 ft). Štrbské pleso is now part of the neighborhood of Štrbské Pleso. It is on the municipal lands of the village of Štrba, after which Štrbské Pleso ("Lake Štrba") is now named. The word pleso is applied only to mountain lakes. The locals used to call it "pond" in the past. It is the second-largest glacial lake on the Slovak side of the High Tatras, after Hincovo Pleso, to which it loses by 0.8 acres (3,200 m2). It is fed by underground springs and has no visible outflow stream. Its surface remains frozen for around 155 days per year.
Worldwide recognition of the High Tatra served exactly 43 years ago. In February 1970, the world championships took place in classical ski disciplines. Tatras slopes, new ski jumpers, modified cross-country skiing tracks, but also a perfect organization and a timeless sports complex attracted Strbske Pleso to the world's best skiers.
There were 500 athletes from 25 countries in the world. Czechoslovak colors on the bridges were defended mainly by the 1968 Olympic winner from Grenoble, Jiří Raška. In the championships he jumped 99 m on the P-90 bridge and won silver for Czechoslovakia. Gold had taken home to Gari Napalkov from the Soviet Union with 109.5 m. He also won the first prize on the P-70 bridge.
